"We, the established practitioners and practices, must work together, and in support of each other, for the ultimate benefit of the practice of architecture and the island as a whole."

President's Message

I am gratified by the trust placed in me by the members of the Barbados institute of Architects in recently electing me President of the Institute in this time of change. I am resolved to work in the interest of the members of the BIA to uphold and promote the interest of Architects, and Architecture, as we strive to positively impact the built environment of the island.

Earlier this year I represented the BIA at stake holder meetings pertaining to the new Planning Act and subsequently the efforts to establish amendments to the act to realize a One Stop Shop for planning applications and subsequent building code compliance. Whilst the provisions of the proposed amendments remain to be formalized the intent as structured will raise the bar for building consultant services, and contractors, and represents a positive step forward for the industry and the island as a whole. The industry is at an important turning point that will set the stage for continued development of the island for decades to come. Council will remain focussed on the progress of the proposed amendments and will keep the membership appraised of further developments.

At this time it behooves the architects of the island to be seen and heard in working to shape the future of Barbados. Lets not stand silent whilst discussions are had, and decisions are made, that can have far reaching impact on both the practice and product of architecture. The BIA is ideally positioned to champion the many benefits the profession has to offer the country and needs active and committed input from all.

The BIA has a significant roll to play in educating the populous to the benefits of good design. This must be mission critical for the body of architects and requires commitment, time, and money. Our initial priorities have to be, a concerted drive to increase the institute’s membership, introduce programs to improve our visibility, attend forums to be heard, and to raise funds to finance the work of the BIA.

We must also look to our energetic youth to promote and reinforce the ideals of architecture. We must mentor, encourage, and lift up our young architects, students, and dreamers to be the future of Barbados. We, the established practitioners and practices, must work together, and in support of each other, for the ultimate benefit of the practice of architecture and the island as a whole.

I trust that you will join me in raising the bar.

President
